Massive and Unusual Catlinite Pipe Bowl from the Northern Plains, Ca. 1870s

This is a massive catlinite elbow pipe bowl carved in a unique form, with a grooved slab running up the front of the bowl. Probably from the upper Missouri river area, dating from the 1870s, this bowl measures approximately 4 1/4 inches long and 4 1/8 high, with a diameter of about one and a half inches. A stunning work of Plains Indian art.
